Donald K.The Zombie is the drink that got tiki its dangerous reputation — Donn Beach built it in 1937 and famously cut customers off at two. The original is a small pharmacy of ingredients: three rums, two grapefruits, lime, pomegranate, cinnamon, falernum, bitters. This mix carries all of it but the rum — white and pink grapefruit, lime, a thread of pomegranate, Angostura, and a hit of cinnamon — balanced so it tastes like the real thing and not fruit punch.
Four ounces of mix, two ounces of dark rum, over ice. Feeling brave? A float of overproof turns it back into the drink Donn rationed — you may want to reinforce the windows and doors first. Either way, you've made one of the most complicated cocktails ever put on a menu, at home, and nobody has to know it took thirty seconds.
Once opened, refrigerate and use within 30 days — unopened, it keeps for two years from the date of manufacture.
Which bottle of booze? Weeknights: any honest rum under $20. Showing off: something aged, with a story.
The bar book keeps a page open
Every legendary tiki recipe started as somebody's kitchen experiment. If you've built a pour worth bragging about, we want it – set in the double-line frame, printed in the official BG Reynolds bar book, your name on the credit line, shelved between the Mai Tai and the Jet Pilot where it belongs.
Got a pour that deserves the double-line frame? Send it in. Recipes we publish appear as official BG Reynolds bar book cards – with your name on the credit line.
Something spilled – please add a drink name, your credit line, an email, and at least one ingredient.
By submitting, you let us publish your recipe and credit line. Exact ounces appreciated. Drink responsibly.
Received – the bar book committee will give it a shake. If we print it, you get the credit.
